If you were to ask the person sitting next to you, “What is the tarot?” you would receive varying responses that may include:
- “Oh yeah, that is the thing where a psychic uses cards with pictures on them to tell your future!”
- “Hm. The tarot. Yeah, I don’t mess with that. That is a dark art.”
- “Isn’t that what people use to determine if they have found their soulmate?”
- Insert your own idea of the tarot here.
Whatever response you receive, whether it is favorable or not, accurate or inaccurate, I would like to take a moment to define how I view the tarot.
For me, the tarot is one method of receiving insight into your life that can help you overcome a problem, situation, concern, etc. you are having and can provide you with helpful suggestions as you move forward in your life. The tarot is also useful for personal healing, growth and learning.
For example, if you are writing a book and all of a sudden are hit with writer’s block, you could ask the tarot, “What can I do to clear my writer’s block?” The cards may tell you to take a break, start a new project, go for a walk in nature to clear your heard, or give some other suggestion you hadn’t even thought of.
Another example might be, “What can I do to ensure my best chance of receiving an audition callback?” The cards may suggest to get a good night’s rest or to familiarize yourself with the location of the audition beforehand so you know the best way to get there, where to park, or what room you need to go to. The cards might also suggest you trust yourself and your skills, relax, and not to overthink it. They may suggest you increase the amount of time you practice your audition each day to prepare, or any other suggestion you may find helpful.
The key for a “good” tarot reading is to ask a strong quesion. The best questions to ask are ones that are open ended, questions that do not require a yes/no answer. Some examples of open ended questions are:
- What will become of my job interview on Thursday afternoon?
- How can I best plan my time to write my novel?
- I need to set boundaries. How should I start?
- What, in my life, do I need to know right now?
- What careers would best suit me?
- What spiritual lesson am I working on right now?
- What can I do to better communicate with my spouse/partner?
- How can I best use my energy this month?
Some people are hesitant to become involved with the tarot because they don’t want to know what their future holds. While this concern is valid, I do not believe the tarot can accurately predict your future because the future can change and you can change your future. I believe we have free will and everything that happens we have the power within us to change. The outcome of any situation is a natural consequence of your actions. It is similar to a game of chess. If you move your knight to spot x, then your opponent could move their piece to spot y. Like chess pieces we are constantly reacting to and adjusting ourselves to place us in the best possible position for success.
